Antimicrobial scrubs: what they actually do

The manufacturers are clearer about this than the marketing is. It is an odor and garment-life treatment, and they say so themselves.

Read the manufacturer’s own words rather than the marketing. Cherokee’s listings state that garments featuring antimicrobial technology do not protect users or others against bacteria, viruses, or other disease organisms. That is the brand selling the feature, telling you what it is not. Everything else on this page follows from that sentence.

What the treatment is for

Two things, both real and both modest.

Odor. The smell in worn fabric comes from bacteria metabolizing sweat. A treatment that inhibits those organisms reduces the smell. Over a twelve-hour shift in a warm unit that is a genuine quality-of-life benefit.

Garment life. The same organisms degrade fibers over time. Inhibiting them extends how long the garment lasts. Cherokee states 50+ washings for its treatment, which is the only durability figure we found published.

What it is not for

It is not infection control. It does not protect you from what is on your scrubs, it does not protect patients from what is on your scrubs, and it does not reduce transmission. The manufacturers say this themselves, in the small print under the feature they are selling.

It is also not fluid resistance. These are separate properties, and everyday scrubs have neither - WonderWink states “AAMI Level Not Rated, non-fluid-resistant” on its own listings, which is true of essentially every scrub in this price range.

The treatments you will see named

Certainty (Cherokee), which also appears as “Certainty Advanced Odor-Resistant Fabric Technology” on some listings - the branding is inconsistent between garments, which makes it harder to tell whether the underlying treatment differs.

Silvadur (Jaanuu, and noted on some FIGS listings), a silver-ion based treatment. It appears across Jaanuu’s lines, though no wash-count figure is published.

Where a brand mentions a treatment without naming it or stating a durability figure, treat it as marketing rather than a specification.

Does it survive laundering?

Cherokee’s 50+ washings is the only published number we found. On four shifts a week with a garment worn once per week, that is roughly a year - which is a reasonable garment life anyway, so the treatment plausibly lasts as long as the scrub does.

No brand publishes what happens after that, and nobody publishes whether industrial laundering degrades it faster than home washing. Those are fair questions with no available answer.

Is it worth paying extra for?

A small amount, for odor, if you work warm units or long shifts. It is also worth noting that most of the garments carrying these treatments would be reasonable buys without them - the treatment is bundled with the line rather than sold separately, so you are rarely paying a specific premium for it.

What genuinely helps with odor, in order: a lighter fabric with real moisture management, washing them promptly rather than leaving them in a bag, skipping fabric softener (it coats fibers and traps odor), and owning enough sets that nothing gets worn twice. The treatment is a useful addition to those rather than a substitute for them.

The picks in full

Every pick, in order

01

The most honestly documented treatment

Cherokee Infinity V-Neck Scrub Top

Certainty, stated to last 50+ washings - with an explicit disclaimer.

A teal v-neck scrub top with chest pockets

Four-way stretch scrub top

Fabric
95% polyester / 5% spandex poplin; rib trim 96/4
Stated properties
Four-way stretch, moisture wicking, wrinkle resistant
Treatment
Certainty antimicrobial, stated to last 50+ washings
Pockets
Two front, interior pocket on the right, pen slots on both
Care
Machine washable

Specs: Walmart - Cherokee Infinity Women's V-Neck Scrub Top CK623A listing

Cherokee does the thing we most want to see from a brand making a treatment claim: it states a specific durability figure - 50+ washings - and then explicitly disclaims what the treatment does not do, in its own listing copy. On a page about a frequently overstated feature, that honesty is the single strongest reason to recommend this garment.

Disclosure honesty9.8
Published wash count9.4
Laundry durability9.4
Value9.2
Softness6.4
Overall8.8 / 10

What it gets right

  • Poly-spandex with no rayon, so this one actually survives a hot industrial wash
  • Pen slots in both front pockets rather than one, which sounds trivial until it isn't
  • Roughly half the price of the premium brands for a comparable stretch fabric
  • Phone-sized interior pocket, and Cherokee states the size rather than implying it

What it gets wrong

  • Poplin feels crisper and less soft than the premium blends - this is a fabric you get used to, not one you love
  • Cherokee's antimicrobial branding is inconsistent across listings (Certainty vs Certainty Advanced)
  • Cherokee's own disclaimer is explicit that the antimicrobial treatment does not protect the wearer or others from bacteria or viruses - it is an odor and garment-life claim only

Who should skip itYou are buying for softness. If what you want is the hand-feel of a premium scrub, no amount of stretch percentage will make a poplin feel like one.

02

A named treatment plus moisture management

Jaanuu Rhena Essential 1-Pocket V-Neck Top

Silvadur, in the lightest published fabric weight here.

A lightweight v-neck scrub top

Lightweight scrub top

Fabric
76% polyester, 18% rayon, 6% spandex
Weight
6 oz/yd2
Treatment
Silvadur antimicrobial
Pockets
One left chest pocket
Fit
Tailored and tuckable, back darts, side vents
Sizes
XXS to 3XL

Specs: Garment Decor - Jaanuu W10001 Rhena Essential specifications

Jaanuu names its treatment - Silvadur - across its lines, and pairs it here with moisture management and wrinkle and fade resistance in a 6 oz/yd2 fabric. Odor is partly a moisture problem, so a light fabric that wicks is doing as much practical work as the treatment. No wash-count figure is published, which is the gap against Cherokee.

Published specs9.0
Breathability9.4
Laundry durability7.6
Size range9.2
Pocket count3.0
Overall8.1 / 10

What it gets right

  • At 6 oz/yd2 this is the lightest scrub fabric with a published weight here, which is the whole point if you run hot
  • Genuinely tuckable with back darts, so it holds a shape rather than bagging out
  • An XXS to 3XL range is wider than most brands publish
  • Only 18% rayon, so it survives laundering better than the softer premium blends

What it gets wrong

  • ONE pocket. That is the trade for the silhouette and it is a big one
  • Light fabric is less opaque - check it against your own standards before a shift
  • Fabric weight figures differ slightly between retailer listings
  • The Silvadur treatment is an odor and garment-life claim, not protection for you or patients

Who should skip itYou carry anything in your top. A single chest pocket is the defining limitation of this garment, and no amount of liking the fabric changes the count.

03

A treated outer layer

Cherokee Infinity Zip-Front Scrub Jacket

Certainty Advanced on the garment you wash least often.

A navy zip-front scrub jacket

Scrub jacket

Pockets
Two set-in front, interior cell phone pocket on the right
Treatment
Certainty Advanced odor-resistant fabric technology
Closure
Full zip front
Care
Machine washable

Specs: Walmart - Cherokee Infinity scrub jacket listing

The most logical place for an odor-control treatment is the garment you launder least, and for most people that is the jacket - it does not touch patients directly and gets washed weekly rather than per shift. Note that Cherokee's branding is inconsistent across listings, appearing as both Certainty and Certainty Advanced.

Practical fit for treatment9.0
Value9.2
Laundry durability9.0
Pocket utility7.0
Published specs7.0
Overall7.9 / 10

What it gets right

  • Zip front means you can get out of it with gloved or contaminated hands without pulling it over your head
  • The interior phone pocket is on the inside of the jacket, which keeps your phone off the patient-facing layer
  • The cheapest way to solve the one real problem with scrubs: hospitals are cold

What it gets wrong

  • Set-in pockets are shallower than patch pockets and things fall out when you bend
  • Same odor-resistant-only antimicrobial caveat as the rest of the Infinity line
  • Cherokee does not publish a fabric composition on the jacket listings located

Who should skip itYour unit bans outer layers at the bedside. A jacket you have to take off at every door is a jacket you will leave in your locker.

04

A treated pant in the softer fabric line

Jaanuu Rubi UltraSoft Scrub Joggers

Silvadur on the UltraSOFT line, with fade resistance stated.

A pair of jogger-cuffed scrub pants

Jogger scrub pant

Fabric line
Jaanuu UltraSOFT
Treatment
Silvadur antimicrobial
Style
Jogger cuff
Stated properties
All-around stretch, moisture control, fade resistance

Specs: Garment Decor - Jaanuu W40001 Rubi UltraSoft Joggers

Included because pants are where odor actually accumulates for many people and treated pants are less common than treated tops. Fade resistance alongside the treatment is the more practically useful claim of the two on a dark pant. Jaanuu does not publish this garment's composition, which on a premium pant is a fair thing to object to.

Softness9.2
Fade resistance9.0
Stretch8.8
Published specs4.4
Breathability6.0
Overall7.6 / 10

What it gets right

  • The UltraSOFT line is the soft end of Jaanuu's range, which is the reason to choose this over a cheaper jogger
  • Fade resistance is a published claim and it is the failure people actually notice on dark scrubs
  • Jogger cuff keeps the hem off the floor, which is a hygiene point as much as a style one

What it gets wrong

  • Composition percentages are not published on the listings located, unlike Jaanuu's tops
  • The UltraSOFT fabric is the heavier one in the range, so it runs warm
  • Premium price for a pant whose fabric specification is not fully disclosed

Who should skip itYou want to know exactly what you are buying. Jaanuu publishes composition for its tops and not for this pant, and on a garment this expensive that is a fair thing to object to.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Do antimicrobial scrubs prevent infection?

No, and Cherokee’s own listings state it plainly: garments featuring antimicrobial technology do not protect users or others against bacteria, viruses or other disease organisms. It is an odor and garment-life treatment.

How long does the antimicrobial treatment last?

Cherokee states 50+ washings, which is the only published figure we could find. On a once-a-week wear cycle that is roughly a year. No brand publishes what happens afterwards, or whether industrial laundering degrades it faster.

What is Silvadur?

A silver-ion based antimicrobial treatment, named on Jaanuu’s lines and noted on some FIGS listings. Jaanuu does not publish a wash-count figure for it, which is the gap compared with Cherokee’s stated 50+ washings.

Are antimicrobial scrubs worth the extra cost?

Modestly, for odor on warm units or long shifts - and in practice the treatment is usually bundled with the line rather than sold as a premium, so you rarely pay specifically for it. A lighter moisture-wicking fabric and prompt laundering do more.

Are antimicrobial scrubs fluid resistant?

No - those are separate properties and everyday scrubs have neither. WonderWink states “AAMI Level Not Rated, non-fluid-resistant” on its own listings, and that is true across this price range. A barrier requires a gown.

How this page was put together

We start from the problem the gear has to solve over twelve hours, shortlist products that are currently sold, compare the manufacturers’ published specifications against what that problem actually needs, and read owner feedback at volume to find the failure modes worth reporting. We have not worn, used or physically tested any of this. Where a figure comes from a manufacturer we name them; where published figures disagree with each other we say so rather than picking the flattering one; where nobody publishes a figure we say that too. We print no prices, because a stale number is worse than none. Read the full method.
