WonderWink vs Cherokee

The two mid-market brands that publish the most, compared on the two things that actually differ: hardware and fabric.

By Selena H.
Two scrub tops folded side by side

Buy Cherokee if you want a fabric with real stretch that still survives industrial laundry, and pen slots in both pockets. Buy WonderWink if you want built-in badge hardware, more pockets, and the only published pocket dimensions in the category. This is the comparison that matters most if your employer launders your scrubs, because both survive it.

Fabric: Cherokee

A 95/5 poly-spandex poplin is a better fabric to work in than 100% polyester. It has genuine four-way stretch from the elastane, the woven poplin base gives it structure so it recovers rather than bagging out, and 5% less polyester breathes measurably better over twelve hours.

WonderWink’s mechanical stretch on the Basic line is a legitimate alternative rather than a compromise - it gives less and it does not wash out, which is the right trade if you want a garment that behaves identically in year three. But for comfort now, the poplin wins.

Hardware: WonderWink

The silicone D-ring and shoulder badge loop are the standout, and they solve a real problem: clipping a badge reel through a pocket edge is how pockets tear, and it is what almost everyone does. A purpose-built attachment point is a small engineering decision that pays off over a year.

Add four pockets with inner utility loops that keep shears upright, 4 in side vents that let the hem sit over a hip rather than pulling across it, and reflective tape at the back neck for the walk across a parking garage at 7am. Cherokee has none of these.

Honesty: both, differently

This is where both brands come out well, and better than the premium tier.

Cherokee states a specific durability figure for its antimicrobial treatment - 50+ washings - and then explicitly disclaims what the treatment does not do: it does not protect users or others against bacteria, viruses or disease organisms. That is the brand selling the feature telling you its limits.

WonderWink states “AAMI Level Not Rated, non-fluid-resistant” on its own listings, rather than leaving you to assume a clinical garment offers a barrier. And it publishes an actual pocket dimension, which no premium brand does.

Who should buy which

Comfort over twelve hours is your priority. Cherokee. The poplin stretches and breathes better.

Your badge reel keeps destroying your pockets. WonderWink, for the D-ring.

You want stretch that is still there in year three. WonderWink Basic, for mechanical stretch.

You carry a lot. WonderWink, for four pockets over two.

You run hot. Cherokee, because 100% polyester is the least breathable option in the category.

You need to know a pocket will fit your phone. Either - they are the only two brands that address it, Cherokee by stating phone capacity and WonderWink by publishing a dimension.

One practical warning

Several WonderWink W123 colorways appear at retailers marked no longer available. If you find a color and fit that works, buy more than one - it is the brand most likely to have discontinued your choice by the time you want to repeat it.

Specs: Walmart - Cherokee Infinity Women's V-Neck Scrub Top CK623A listing

Cherokee wins on fabric: a 95/5 poly-spandex poplin gives real four-way stretch and breathes better than 100% polyester, while still having no rayon to lose in the wash. Pen slots in BOTH front pockets and a stated phone-sized interior pocket. It is also the most honest brand on this site, explicitly disclaiming what its antimicrobial treatment does not do.

Stretch9.0
Breathability7.4
Pocket geometry9.0
Disclosure honesty9.8
Badge hardware3.0
Overall8.6 / 10

What it gets right

  • Poly-spandex with no rayon, so this one actually survives a hot industrial wash
  • Pen slots in both front pockets rather than one, which sounds trivial until it isn't
  • Roughly half the price of the premium brands for a comparable stretch fabric
  • Phone-sized interior pocket, and Cherokee states the size rather than implying it

What it gets wrong

  • Poplin feels crisper and less soft than the premium blends - this is a fabric you get used to, not one you love
  • Cherokee's antimicrobial branding is inconsistent across listings (Certainty vs Certainty Advanced)
  • Cherokee's own disclaimer is explicit that the antimicrobial treatment does not protect the wearer or others from bacteria or viruses - it is an odor and garment-life claim only

Who should skip itYou are buying for softness. If what you want is the hand-feel of a premium scrub, no amount of stretch percentage will make a poplin feel like one.

WonderWink W123 Stylized V-Neck Scrub Top

Buy WonderWink if the practical hardware matters more than the hand-feel.

Rating
AAMI Level Not Rated, non-fluid-resistant, latex free

Specs: Benco - WonderWink W123 Stylized V-Neck Scrub Top listing

WonderWink wins on the details nobody else bothers with: a silicone D-ring and a shoulder badge loop so your badge is not clipped through fabric that then tears, four pockets with inner utility loops, reflective tape at the back neck, and 4 in side vents. It also publishes actual pocket dimensions on its Basic line. 100% polyester is the least breathable fabric here.

Badge hardware9.6
Pocket count9.0
Laundry durability9.6
Value9.2
Breathability4.8
Overall8.4 / 10

What it gets right

  • A silicone D-ring and a shoulder badge loop built in, so your badge is not clipped through the fabric
  • 100% polyester, which is the single most industrial-laundry-tolerant fabric in this whole category
  • Reflective tape at the back neck is a genuinely useful detail for anyone walking to a parking garage at 7am in winter
  • Four pockets plus hidden compartments is unusual on a top

What it gets wrong

  • 100% polyester is the least breathable option here, and it shows on a warm unit
  • WonderWink states AAMI Level Not Rated and non-fluid-resistant, so this is not a barrier garment
  • Several W123 colorways appear at retailers marked no longer available
  • Pocket dimensions are published for the Basic top but not the Stylized

Who should skip itYou run hot or work somewhere warm. 100% polyester with no natural fiber content is the fabric that makes a bad night worse.

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Is Cherokee or WonderWink better?

Cherokee for fabric - a 95/5 poly-spandex poplin stretches and breathes better than 100% polyester. WonderWink for hardware - a badge D-ring, four pockets, side vents and published pocket dimensions. Both survive industrial laundry, which is the main reason to consider either.

Which is better for employer-laundered scrubs?

Either, and that is the point of this comparison - neither contains rayon, so both survive hot industrial washing in a way the premium brands do not. Choose on fabric comfort versus practical hardware.

What is a silicone D-ring for?

Attaching a badge reel without clipping it through the pocket edge, which is how scrub pockets tear. WonderWink’s Stylized line has one plus a shoulder badge loop; Cherokee states neither.

Is mechanical stretch worse than spandex?

It gives less, and it does not degrade. Spandex gives more and gradually washes out. If you want a garment that behaves the same in year three, mechanical is the better choice rather than the worse one.

Why are some WonderWink colors discontinued?

We cannot say why, only that several W123 colorways appear at retailers marked no longer available. The practical response is to buy more than one set when you find a color and fit that works.

How this page was put together

We start from the problem the gear has to solve over twelve hours, shortlist products that are currently sold, compare the manufacturers’ published specifications against what that problem actually needs, and read owner feedback at volume to find the failure modes worth reporting. We have not worn, used or physically tested any of this. Where a figure comes from a manufacturer we name them; where published figures disagree with each other we say so rather than picking the flattering one; where nobody publishes a figure we say that too. We print no prices, because a stale number is worse than none. Read the full method.
